Friday was daycare day for the kids. Laurel and I dropped off the kids, went to breakfast, and saw the 10:20 am showing of The Dark Knight! It was soooooo good! Laurel and I were both closing our eyes most of the time! How scary and weird was the Joker?? But he was also funny at the same time? So strange. But so great.
After the movie we walked down to the ferry that takes you to Governor's Island for free! Governor's Island is 800 yards from lower Manhattan. It was a military base for almost 2 centuries. In 1996 it closed and now is practically a ghost town! It was like something out of the twilight zone! A beautiful island covered with pretty houses and brick buildings. Tons of acres of grass fields, a hospital, play grounds, an empty pool, and even a theater. But no one lives there! It is completely vacant!
On Fridays you can rent beach cruises to ride around the island for free. Practically everything is free there because they want people to come visit the island. It was so fun riding the bikes around and looking at all of the houses and buildings. The views from the island are incredible! You can see all of lower Manhattan, the statue of liberty, and Staten Island. Even though it was really fun we still couldn't get over how weird it was that they haven't done anything with this island for more than 10 years. They could easily put schools over there! People could even live over there! It's only 7 minutes from the city. Laurel and I are convinced that something bad happened there and that's why they aren't doing anything with it. Hmmm....
Here are some fun pictures of us! It was probably the hottest day of my life. Literally. I don't think I have ever sweat so much.
