mozza sticks.

I bought way too many string cheese's from the store the other day. What to do with them I thought? MOZZArella sticks!

About five years ago, I was watching Giada on The Food Network and she made these lovely sticks one day. It looked pretty easy and I decided to make them the next day. I failed the first time :( I cut the cheese sticks too thick. I learned my lesson and the next batch were crispy, melty, and delicious. I have been making them ever since.

They are so fun to make for a group of people because they are best when they are hot out of the oil! They go FAST and are best eaten with marinara sauce.

Mozza Sticks

  • Mozzarella cheese cut into 1/2 inch wide peices or string cheese sticks cut in half (easy way)
  • Italian breadcrumbs
  • Eggs
  • Cooking oil
Crack a few eggs into a bowl and whisk together for an egg wash. Then dip the mozza sticks into the egg wash and cover them in breadcrumbs. Set aside on a cookie sheet.

After all sticks have been covered, do it all over again. Dip in egg, then cover with breadcrumbs (double coating them will help hold the melted cheese inside).

Put them in the freezer for a few hours. This is an important step. The cheese will not hold inside if they are cooked before chilling.

When ready to eat, heat oil on medium heat in a large saucepan to avoid splashing. Throw a couple of breadcrumbs into the oil to test if it is ready.

Put one mozza stick into the oil to play with cooking times. Usually it only takes a minute to cook them.

Serve hot with marinara sauce!

Um, yum! If my boys wouldn't plow through the bag of string cheese I bought from Costco, I'd have extra to make these!
